The Frostbite event has been going for many years now, the trophy dates back to 1971 when Cliff Featherstone was the first winner with Paul Berriman challenging him. The event is generally run now in December and is a simple affair on a pair of skis to allow all to take part. Occasionally the race has mild conditions, but many have been run in freezing, snowy conditions as the photos show. The photos at the bottom are from around 1985 or 1986. The photo's are at the top of the old ramp which is now part of the scrap dock next to the new RNLI station when the skiers were all part of the old Hartlepool Yacht Club.
The frostbite trophy, I am reliably informed, was donated by Bill Beattie who was a member of the HYC ski section and owned a sports shop in Stockton. Most of the past winners are still skiing and boating.
