WMBRC power boat racing - Vice Commodores day 24-3-18

A few members went across to Windermere at the weekend to spectate at the first of the motorboat club's annual race series.

There were around fifteen boats on the water racing against each other on a handicap system. So on this basis even  the smaller boats have a chance of winning against the larger faster craft. There were a good mix of boats competing, mainly Phantom's between 16 and 20 feet with a variety of engines from 1.3 -  2.5 litre. These were pitched against much faster catamaran race boats. In theory all boats should cross the finish line at the same time, however in practice this never really happens.
The programme had 6 races over the afternoon from 1pm with a break for tea in between. The distances in each race varied from 5 or 10 laps on a long or short course. The handicapping is calculated after each race ready for the next one. Drivers must then cross the start line on their allotted start time by viewing the large timing clock and then crossing the line at their designated start time. Something that takes a bit of judging!

The weather was very good for March, the lake was calm and there was no wind. Ideal conditions on the day. As ever the hospitality at WMBRC was very welcoming.
